Stress & Anxiety Management

It is interesting that the increased pace of life means we often notice when we are calm rather than when we are stressed. Chronic stress for some has become the norm. The reality is a person can carry their stress anywhere, a bit like a suitcase. While short term stress has some uses it is the long term chronic stress that is unhealthy.

Why are we so stressed. Our environmental and social order has changed more in the last 30 years than in the previous 300 years. The increased pace of modern society – and the increased rate of technological change have deprived people of adequate time to adjust to these changes. There is an increased incidence of anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders (such as panic attacks, phobias, obsessions etc) are the outcome of cumulative stress.

Modern day stress is more akin to pressure (such as work and family issues) rather than stress related danger (such as dealing with a predator). Our bodies are more adept at coping with danger rather than with pressure. Our built in response to stress has not changed. It is the type of stress that has changed.

In small amounts stress can be beneficial; it:
• Challenges us
• Encourages change and adaptation
• Strengthens us emotionally
• Strengthens us biochemically

The Bio-chemistry of stress
The stress response is often referred to as the ‘flight or fight’ response. ‘Flight or fight ‘is characterised by:
• Heart pumping harder
• Increased blood pressure
• Airways into the lungs open wider
• Increased blood flow to the muscles
• Increased blood clotting
• Fats & sugars being released
• Increased secretion of adrenaline, cortisol & cholesterol

Chronic stress creates havoc, some researchers maintain that over 85% of chronic diseases have stress-related factors.
